Description

Last pic you say the V-2, now meet its American descendant, the PGM-11, first launched in 1953 and developed by a team of German roxket engineers brought to the US as part of Operation Paperclip after WW2. It was used in the first ever live nuclear missile tests by the US. It was also sometimes referred to as a MRBM (Medium Range Ballistic Missile), though under the DoD's classification system this was somewhat of a misnomer. The Redstone served with the US Army from June 1958 to June 1964; its use as the Army field artillery theater ballistic missile earned it the nickname 'the Army's Workhorse'.

In 1961 the Redstone was used for four sub-orbital launches for the Project Mercury manned space program; this was known as the Mercury-Redstone 3. Some Redstones were modified in the mid to late 1960s for follow one special projects; one such project saw the missiles being called 'Sparta missiles' (and if you make the joke, I swear that I will end you). For its non-military service, the Redstone earned the nickname 'Old Reliable'.

Again, sorry for the bad angle; this thing was massive (tall, anyway). Though it does make it look pretty intimidating, considering it is (or was, anyway) a freaking NUCLEAR MISSILE!!!
