M2A2 Howitzer, Terra-Star

This howitzer was an experimental model for studies in improved mobility for towed artillery pieces. Terra-Star was a major/minor wheel running gear incorporated in the standard M2A2. On standard systems, the two bottom wheels would roll as normal, but on soft surfaces all three wheels were braked, and drive was transfered to a central axle. Then the whole ensemble would rotate, allowing the weapon to 'walk' forward. Lockheed and the Arsenal did joint testing on this project from 1969 to 1977, when it was canceled.

The cannon here had its carriage and recoil mechanism built at the Arsenal in 1945, and was restored and repainted in, you guessed it, 1997.
