Description

My previous picture of this type of plane was the civilian DC-3 (see it here: [link]). There are some differences between the DC-3 and the C-47.

The C-47 was a militarized version of the DC-3 made for WWII. The primary differences were the addition of a cargo door and a strengthened floor. Over 10,000 Skytrains were produced by plants in Long Beach, Santa Monica, and Oklahoma City; the Oklahoma City plant alone produced 5354 Skytrains between March 43 and August 45.
The Allies used this plane extensivly. In the Pacific, it was used to counter lightning-quick mobility of the lightly-equipped Japanese Army, as well as to ferry troops throughout the Pacific through island-hopping. In Europe, the C-47 and a paratrooper variant, the C-53 Skytrooper, saw heavy use in towing gliders, airborne assaults, and to airlift supplies, especially to the troops at Bastogne. The C-47's also flew the 'Hump' an airroute between India and China that crossed the Himalayas, as well as the Berlin Airlift.
The C-47 saw frontline service clear to the 1950's and still remained in service until 1967. After the war, thousands of Skytrains deemed as surplus were converted to civilian usage, and some of these remain in service to this day. This just shows off the high-quality and capability of the C-47.

The aircraft pictured here holds a place of honor on the Museum's front line, just to the right of the entrance. It retains its D-Day stripes, on the wings, and even though you can't see it in this picture, to the aft near the tail as well.
